Chapter 8

Breathing to Sing

What You Will Learn

This chapter focuses on learning the basics of the respiratory system as it relates to breathing for singing, as well as acquiring skills to begin to access and execute the breathing functions necessary for success with breath management.

I Teach This Because

The manner in which a singer both takes in and manages their breath is crucial to the success of the vocal sound. This chapter has a specific approach, because the goal is to learn how to enhance and manage the breath in an effective, efficient way, to allow the vocal cords to vibrate freely. Every singer must have a basic knowledge of the respiratory process in conjunction with the practice of well-constructed vocal exercises to strengthen and integrate the breathing with the vocal production.

Practical Vocal Science

Breathing for Singing

Many singers are unfamiliar with good breathing strategies or have experienced breathing instruction that is sketchy or confusing. On the other hand, there are singers who are fortunate enough to have well-informed teachers who completely understand the breathing mechanism and successfully train them. The breath management approach presented here is a result of my own personal journey of work with former teachers, colleagues, study, and research. I have drawn primarily from the ideas put forth in schools of classical vocal pedagogy that tap into the use of compressed breath. However, I would prefer to avoid labeling this breathing instruction; it is just a strategy to learn how to manage breathing for singing effectively.

The approach is to start slowly and build on your knowledge and awareness of how to use the breath for singing. Once you become aware of the feelings within your body that occur when the breath is taken in and let out, then you can learn how to coordinate that with the singing process. Vocal Fitness Training’s materials are purposefully progressive, so as you become more adept with your breathing skills, additional vocal exercises will challenge both your voice and breath further.

Here is why the breath is so important:
